Ecological aspects

The mine construction will be carried out according to a special project developed by highly qualified mining engineers from Russian and Belarusian design and research organizations with many years of extensive experience in designing and constructing mining enterprises

The first stage of construction involves creating of an underground mining complex (mine) for the extraction of potassium-magnesium salts at the Nivensky-I deposit, located on the production site of LLC “К-Potash Service”. This includes the construction of two shafts: a cage shaft (for hoisting personnel, materials, and equipment) and a skip shaft (for delivering ore to the surface). Shaft sinking will be carried out using mechanized methods with a specialized tunneling complex for layered excavation and removal of rock mass, which completely eliminates the use of blasting operations

Key Environmental Aspects of the Project

  • The absence of sinkholes and surface deformations is achieved through the following engineering solutions:
  • Leaving protective pillars of potassium-magnesium salt seams beneath infrastructure objects of populated areas. This means that seams located directly under the territory of the Nivenskoe settlement will not be extracted
  • Significant depth (over 1,100 meters) of mining operations and selection of optimal cross-sections for mine workings (height and width not exceeding 4–6 meters)
  • Backfilling of mined-out voids with a solution of barren rock, formed after ore processing, pumped into the mine workings via specialized pipelines
  • Selective extraction of ore — a special mining procedure involving extraction only of seams with a specified mineral composition, excluding the extraction of barren rock
  • The absence of harmful emissions into the atmosphere is achieved through the following factors:
  • Low content of methane, as well as hydrogen sulfide and nitrogen oxides, in the rocks of these deposits (based on results of exploration and reserve estimation conducted by VNIMI and VostNII)
  • Use of a direct transportation scheme to the ore processing plant , eliminating intermediate stockpiling of mined raw material and thereby minimizing emissions of solid suspended particles into the atmosphere
  • The usage of a finished product packaging complex at the processing plant, which will eliminate storage of finished products in open stockpiles and ensure a low level of particulate emissions
  • Effective dust suppression and settling of compressed dust through the use of dust-suppressing equipment integrated into the tunneling complex
  • Application of mining equipment with electric motors designed for explosion-proof operation, which minimizes emissions of carbon dioxide from the mine into the atmosphere
  • Noise reduction is achieved through the following engineering solutions:
  • Installation of sound-absorbing screens along the technological roads of LLC “K-Potash Service” during both the construction and operational phases
  • Landscaping with greenery along the perimeter of the industrial site
  • Placement of hoisting machinery in separate buildings for the cage and skip shafts
  • Implementation of mine ventilation technology using a main fan installed within enclosed ventilation ducts
  • Delivery of finished products to consumers primarily during daytime hours, utilizing nighttime hours exclusively for maneuvering and preparatory operations
  • Elimination of negative impacts on surface and groundwater bodies is achieved through the following factors:
  • Construction of additional biological treatment facilities and local wastewater treatment systems for cleaning household and stormwater runoff
  • Rehabilitation of existing water discharge channels
  • Application of ground freezing technology during the construction of the cage and skip shafts
  • Installation of waterproofing rings in the shafts to ensure hydro-isolation
  • Use of concrete lining along the entire length of the shafts
  • The absence of surface rock dumps , including at production and consumption waste disposal sites, is achieved through the following engineering solutions:
  • The possibility of utilizing barren rock extracted to the surface in agricultural activities, as confirmed by a conclusion from TsNIIGeofond based on laboratory analysis of selected core samples
  • Transportation of excavated barren rock, extracted during tunneling and shaft construction, to designated polygons for further utilization

Environmental Monitoring

  • Since 2014 and up to the present, environmental monitoring of the current qualitative state of atmospheric air, surface water bodies, and soils has been conducted at the production site of LLC "K-Potash Service" in the settlements of Nivenskoye and Vladimirvo. The obtained data are used in the company's current environmental protection activities and were also considered during the development of the project's Feasibility Study (FS)
  • Continuous industrial environmental monitoring is carried out on the production site. Monitored parameters include noise levels, as well as the quality of atmospheric air and open water bodies, including discharge channels. Indicators of noise impact, atmospheric air quality, and open water bodies, including the water diversion channels FR-14-1 and FR-19-2, are monitored. Environmental control has been conducted prior to the start of enterprise operations to determine its impact on the environment and the local population during the operation of the facility
